Andres Jimenez Coy
Inspired by his grandfather's illustrations, Andres Jimenez Coy of Sogamoso created these hardcover notebooks by hand. The construction was made possible by the teachings of his close childhood friend, Daniel of Mwiska. Andres' grandfather, Alberto Coy Montaña, was a renowned architect and historian whose legacy lives on in the buildings of Sogamoso. He helped design the city's flag, a symbol of strength for the "City of the Sun." Andres carries his grandfather's legacy with him, even tattooed the Sun of Sogamoso on his wrist, along with his grandfather's signature.
The Coy family has played a crucial role in the success of Sumercé Artisans. Their home in Sogamoso is my second home, a place of rest and inspiration every time I return. Much of what we achieved at Sumercé Artisans is thanks to their care and support - to Marcela ("Mama Coy") and her sons Andres and Jorge.
I captured these photographs in Alberto Montaña Coy's library, a treasure of Muisca relics and historical books about Boyacá. These notebooks are in limited supply, and each one carries with it a deep connection to Boyacá’s rich history and culture.
